Methods in Improving the Launch of ERP System

By Robt Bighorse

Three Simple Ways to Improve the Launch of Your ERP System

Failed integration of a new ERP system is a major fear for the heads of any organization. Provided that the integration of the new system has been properly planned with appropriate contingency arrangements in case something does go awry, there should be no severe problems launching a new ERP system. As you plan for the integration of your new ERP software, including employees who may aid in running the system after it launches is essential. You have a couple of options when choosing how you want to implement your new ERP software; you can either launch the system using only IT staff you already employ or you can utilize a third-party, such as a trainer from the ERP software company, to aid your company in a smooth transition. No matter how you choose to launch your new software, the implementation will take place within your office.

The three tips detailed below are essential components of an easy ERP system integration.

1. Select ERP Leaders Within Your Organization Once the initial transition to the new system is over, your ERP system will be run solely by staff members within your company. It is essential, even if you choose to have outside assistance for your launch, to select employees who will work with the trainer to learn the system; they will be able to take over system maintenance once the third-party help is gone.

Also, having employees work with the third-party will aid the trainer in truly grasping what your company needs from the new ERP system in an average workday. This understanding of your day-to-day activities can help the trainer to customize settings and features in the software that will be helpful to your organization.

2. Find Common Ground Between Your Old and New ERP Systems While all ERP systems do have commonalities, there are noticeable interface and feature differences between different software suites.

All of your employees will handle these changes differently; some may love the new features and others may find them a challenge to get used to. If department heads and ERP system trainers point out common-ground between the two systems, the transition to the new system will likely go more smoothly for all of your staff.

3. Make Training Interesting Inevitably, your employees come from a variety of educational backgrounds, ages, and abilities to utilize new methods of doing things. Because of these factors, your training for the new ERP system should be interesting and focus on a variety of learning styles. It is often useful to provide your employees with user manuals, information hand-outs, and other literature for personal reference once they have completed the training program.

Well-trained employees are an asset that modern business cannot efficiently function without. If your company is planning to launch a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, it is important that employees not only be trained in how to use the new software, but in how it functions.
