How to Help Your Child Be More Responsible Over His Pet

By Nia Lawrence

So, you've finally given in to your child's adamant pleadings to have a dog to call his very own. Despite your lectures on increased responsibility and increased work load, he firmly insists that he can be a responsible pet owner. The only thing that's left to do is to help him out at the beginning, so he will learn to be the best friend his dog will ever have.

One of the things your child should know first and foremost is the type of dog food to get. It is important to approach the right people to ask. Hence, you will not end up with a lot of hit-and-miss attempts when it comes to nutrition. The veterinarian is always the first and best person to get your answers from. This expert on dog breeds will know what kind of nutrients and vitamins your particular dog will require based on his breed. When your dog has its regular check-ups, this person is also the one who can make proper assessment of his changing needs; he can also advise you of changes in the nutritional requirements accordingly. Aside from the vet, your child can also look up some sites online that will be very informative about this topic. Dog lovers' blogs, articles by internet-based veterinarians, and sites of Advance dog food manufacturers are some good sources for all this information.

Aside from knowing what brand to buy, you will have to think about the right amount to buy. Ideally, you should buy as much as they need so that their Advance dog food is always fresh. However, our more practical side is telling us to buy as much as one month's supply so that we don't keep on going back and forth to the shop just to buy food. You also do not want to be caught without it, as hunger will definitely make your pet irritable and highly stressed. This month's supply is not the same for all dogs. The average dog will probably be fine with one large bag a month. For dogs that are not of average size, you may have to buy more or less, depending on the size of the dog. The appetite also varies from dog to dog. For those dogs that tend not to eat a lot, it may be better to get smaller packets of food to keep the freshness longer.

You should also find the right kind of storage for your food. Ideally, you should not keep it in the original package because once opened, it'll be hard to keep the moisture out. This is what mainly causes food to quickly become stale. You should think of investing in a container that has a tightly-sealed cover. The size of container should be enough to hold at least one month's supply. You should also keep a dry measuring scoop in the container so that portioning your dog food will be easier for you.

It will take time to remember all these tips, but you'll soon get the hang of it. Keep in mind that dogs are happy when all their demands are met, and especially so with their Advance dog food needs. It's enough for them to have the right kind of food, in the right amount, at the right time.
