How Effective Is Family Planning

By Bruce Jopples

The world's population had tremendously grown through the years and sources had shown that in 2010 there are about 6.8 billion people living on earth and is expected to continuously grow to 7 billion before the end of 2011. A huge population can be a very serious problem since the resources in our planet had been depleted and not enough to support all its inhabitants. This is why family planning is necessary.

Various campaigns and acts had been launched to fight against the increasing population and family planning had always been the first defense to slowdown the rate of increasing number of people in the world. Family planning means to regulate the number and spacing of the children in a family.

Although this matter had been center of arguments for the state and the church, both have their own ways of making the public aware of the importance of having a planned family. The state uses its power to create laws like Reproductive Health bills and other ads together with the local government to inform people of the different ways of family planning, while churches require people to attend seminars on it before getting married.

Various methods are available and it's up to the person what method will suit their needs and will yield them the best result. The following are the methods we can choose from.

First is the most effective method and morally approved by churches, abstinence. By abstinence we mean to avoid having intercourse. Another is the use of birth control pills, which is done by most women to regulate their hormones and prevent them from getting pregnant; seeking the advice of professionals is needed to be safe. Some use barriers like condoms and cervical caps; this is most appealing to the public since these also give protection from sexually transmitted diseases.

Surgery like vasectomy for men and tubal ligation for the woman are also methods to control birth but not all those who want to undergo these surgeries are allowed; there are some criteria that the professionals have set before allowing it. Withdrawal is a natural method done by couples which is risky. Calendar planning is also a natural way of preventing pregnancy done by women. A woman can track her menstrual cycle and can predict when her fertile day is and avoid having intercourse during those days.

Several methods of family planning are available but the key point to make when fighting against population growth is having the discipline within us. The methods will be useless and ineffective if there is no discipline. The problem will never cease to exist if we don't cooperate and give effort to the achievement of our goals.
